Oklahoma License Plate Renewal
Oklahoma vehicle registration expires at the end of the owner’s birthday month each year. The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) administers vehicle registration and renewal statewide through the CARS (Computer Assisted Registration System) and Service Oklahoma platforms. Registered owners can renew online, by mail, or in person at a licensed tag agent location.
Oklahoma Tag Expiration and Grace Period
Oklahoma registration expires at the end of the registered owner’s birthday month. Oklahoma provides a 30-day grace period after the expiration date before delinquent penalties begin accruing. During the grace period, the vehicle may be driven without penalty, but renewal should be completed as quickly as possible to avoid additional fees.
Late Renewal Penalties
If registration is not renewed within the 30-day grace period, Oklahoma assesses a penalty of $1.00 per day for each day the registration remains delinquent, up to a maximum of $100.00 per year. Penalties are assessed in addition to standard registration fees and must be paid before renewal can be completed.
Oklahoma Emissions Requirements
Oklahoma does not require emissions testing, smog checks, or emissions certificates for vehicle registration renewal. There is no statewide emissions inspection program. Vehicle owners in all Oklahoma counties can renew registration without completing an emissions test.
Oklahoma Registration Renewal Methods
Online Renewal
Oklahoma offers online renewal through Service Oklahoma and the OTC CARS system. To renew online, vehicle owners need their current registration or plate number, VIN information, proof of valid Oklahoma liability insurance, and a credit or debit card for payment. Online renewal is available 24 hours a day and provides immediate confirmation. A small processing fee may apply for online transactions.
Mail Renewal
Vehicle owners who receive a renewal notice by mail can complete renewal by returning the notice with payment to the address listed on the form. Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Oklahoma Tax Commission. Mail renewal should be completed several weeks before the expiration date to ensure the registration sticker arrives on time.
In-Person Renewal
Drivers can renew in person at any licensed Oklahoma tag agent location. Tag agents are located throughout the state and offer walk-in service. In-person renewal allows vehicle owners to pay by cash, check, or card. A tag agent fee is collected in addition to the standard state registration fee.

Iconic Oklahoma Plate
Oklahoma introduced the Iconic Oklahoma license plate as the new standard design for passenger vehicles. The Iconic Oklahoma plate features a distinctive state design and is available to all registered vehicle owners. Drivers may request the Iconic Oklahoma plate at the time of renewal for an additional fee of $4.00, or at another time outside of renewal for $9.00. Existing Oklahoma plates remain valid and do not need to be replaced immediately.
Military and Exemption Renewals
Oklahoma provides registration exemptions and reduced-fee options for eligible military personnel and veterans. Active-duty service members stationed outside of Oklahoma may be eligible to defer renewal using Form 779 (Military Vehicle Registration Waiver). Qualifying veterans may be eligible for specialized license plates and reduced fees. Documentation from the Department of Defense or the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs may be required.
